THE GAME: Today's non conference game features the Hornets of Emporia State University and the Tigers of Fort Hays State University;

This is the season opener for both teams. It marks the seventh time in ten seasons the Tigers and Hornets have played on opening day

THE SERIES: ESU leads the series against FHSU 42-30-2 but the Tigers won last year's game 16-10 at Emporia, Kan, The Hornets won
the previous three games. The Tigers are 4-6 against the Hornets in the last ten seasons.

LASJLYJABi The Tigers spoiled the debut of former Nebraska Cornhusker and Wichita Collegiate star DeAngelo Evans by defeating the
Hornets 16-10 in front of 7.305 fans at Welch Stadium, the largest opening home crowd in school history. Evans scored on the third play of
the game to put ESU up 7-0, but FHSU responded with 13 unanswered first quarter points and would not trail again. Tiger QB Jason Brown
threw for 242 yards and two touchdowns in his Tiger debut and the black and gold defense held Evans to 93 yards rushing on 20 carries It
was the Tigers third victory at Welch Stadium since 1990.

THE COACHE$: Tim O'Connor is in his first season of directing the FHSU football program. The Boise State University graduate has been
a Tiger assistant coach since 1 992. His first squad was picked by conference coaches to finish fourth in the RMAC this season. Hornets head
coach David Wiemers is also in his first season after taking over for Jerry Kill who resigned last spring. Wiemers spent the past two years
as the Hornets Assistant Head Coach and offensive coordinator. He also has coaching experience at Saginaw Valley St, Pittsburg St, and

TD's - 573 yds/rush. 3 TD's) who started all 11 games for the Hornets last season. Copeland lost his favorite target in All-American wide
receiver Lester McCoy, but ESU returns their next top seven receivers. Included in that group is Dan Williams who caught 13 passes for 130
yards and 1 TD. The offense also lost first team All-MIAA runningback DeAngelo Evans. Hell be replaced in the lineup by Shon Wells (31 -
